Volunteering at Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital

At Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital, we expect that all of our applicants should be sincerely committed to helping others, dependable, and able to work independently because of the very demanding nature of healthcare.

In order to apply for an adult volunteer position, you must be at least 18 years of age and out of high school. (If you are under the age of 18 and interested in volunteering, you may be eligible for our Junior Volunteer Program.)

how do I apply?

**Our adult volunteer program is currently full. Please check back at the end of the summer to see if we have any new volunteer opportunities available.**

In order to becoming a member of the Bon Secours Mary Immaculate volunteer staff you must complete the following process:

  1. Submit an Application
The volunteer application (.pdf) requires you to list two business references and other necessary information. After you have completed the application please mail it to the Mary Immaculate Volunteer Office at:

    Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital
    Volunteer Services
    2 Bernardine Drive
    Newport News, Va. 23602
  2. Attend an Interview
Prospective volunteers must interview with the Volunteer Office. Once you have submitted your application, someone from the Volunteer Office will contact you to set-up an interview.

are there any other requirements?

If you are selected as a volunteer at Bon Secours Mary Immaculate, there are some requirements (.doc) you must meet before you can begin actively volunteering. Volunteers must:

  1. Age
In order to be eligible for the adult volunteer program, you must be at least 18 years of age. Those interested in joining the Junior Volunteer Progam, must be aged 14-17.
  2. Undergo a Tuberculosis Skin Test (aka PPD)
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Center for Disease Control require new healthcare volunteers to have two (2) PPD tests, one before orientation and the second within four weeks. Active volunteers require a follow-up test every year while in active volunteer status. The PPD tests are administered by the hospital and are free. Details and instructions will be given after acceptance into the program.
  3. Submit to a Criminal Background Check
Before a prospective volunteer can be accepted into the volunteer program they must first agree to, and pass, a criminal background check. Once the Volunteer Office receives a clearance/denial they will notify the applicant.
  4. Complete Orientation
Orientation to the Volunteer office is required before beginning to volunteer. Hospital Orientation is not mandatory for volunteers, but is encouraged because it will better familiarize the new volunteer with the hospital. This is usually available once a month.
  5. Make a Time Commitment
Volunteers are asked to serve at least four hours a week. Juniors, who continue through the school year, are asked to serve at least eight hours a month during the school year.
  6. Purchase a Uniform
Uniforms are required to identify volunteers from other hospital personnel and to foster a professional image. Volunteers are required to purchase and maintain their own uniforms. Uniform prices range from $16 - $26.
  7. Accept an Assignment
Requests from the departments and the day and time the volunteer is available are major factors in determining assignments. Assignments are based on the needs of the hospital. It is only fair to give a new assignment a fair trial period before determining it is not suitable. The same holds true for the staff with which the volunteer works. If after a suitable length of time has passed, and the volunteer, department supervisor, or the Volunteer Office decides another area might be better, a reassignment can be made.

mentorship programs

Mentorship programs are available to high school students only and are filled on a first come, first serve basis. A hospital department leader must accept the student and assume responsibility for meeting the school's curriculum expectations. Interested students should consult with their school guidance counselor for assistance.

externship or internship

Questions and inquiries about these roles are not processed through the Volunteer Office. Inquiries should be made through Katie Duff at (804) 627-5320 with Human Resources.

court appointed community service

Mary Immaculate Hospital does not provide court appointed community service hours.

shadowing opportunities

Our team at Mary Immaculate Hospital understands that spending time in a medical setting, or area of interest, can be vital in determining a career path. We offer a four week shadowing experience in various hospital professions. A hospital department leader must accept the volunteer into the shadowing program before placement can be made.
