Michael Simpson, DO, MS, FAAFP, a sports medicine specialist with Bon Secours Amelia Medical Associates, explains the signs and symptoms of Sjorgen's syndrome and the ways in which active individuals and athletes can manage the condition with proper treatment.
Dr. Phillip Snider talks about how diabetic athletes and active individuals can stay moving. Diabetes is becoming more and more common, but what many diabetics don't realize is that exercise can be an essential part of their health routine - helping their bodies regulate insulin better and reduce the need for medication.
Dr. Castaldo completed his bachelor of science at the University of Illinois and received his medical degree from Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine in Maywood, Ill. He went on to perform an internship, followed by an internal medicine residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Va. His professional career includes an academic medicine background as well as over 15 years of experience seeing patients. Dr. Castaldo provides a full spectrum of general medicine care for adults with emphases on men’s health, hypertension, elevated cholesterol, diabetes and overall health maintenance. He has received numerous awards for excellence in teaching and patient care.
Dr. Guzman-Lee received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of the Philippines in Quezon City, Philippines. She has a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine and completed an internship at the Philippine General Hospital in Manila, Philippines. Dr. Guzman-Lee participated in a transitional program at St. Michael's Medical Center in Newark, NJ, where she also completed a residency in internal medicine.
Dr. Guzman-Lee is a member of the American College of Physicians and is a diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine. She is multilingual, speaking English, Filipino, and medical Spanish. Prior to joining Amelia Medical Associates, she was associated with another primary care practice in Norfolk, VA.
Michael R. Simpson, DO, specializes in family medicine and primary care sports medicine. He received his medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. He then joined the U.S. Army and completed his residency in family medicine at Martin Army Community Hospital at Fort Benning, Ga. His 10 years of service in the Army included a deployment to Iraq. While in the Army, Dr. Simpson completed a fellowship in sports medicine at Fairfax Family Practice in Fairfax, Va. Dr. Simpson is board certified in family medicine and sports medicine, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He is a member of the American Osteopathic Association, American College of Sports Medicine and the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine.
Prior to medical school, Dr. Simpson earned a master’s degree in exercise science from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C. He serves as a volunteer team physician for local sports teams and has published articles on tendon injuries and hypermobility. He is specially skilled in osteopathic manipulation, trigger points, joint/soft tissue injections and musculoskeletal ultrasound.
Board certified in family medicine, Dr. Snider received his medical degree and fellowship training from Midwestern University, Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine, Glendale, Arizona. He completed his residency with Scottsdale Healthcare, Scottsdale, Arizona. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American Osteopathic Association. Prior to joining Bon Secours, he was Adjunct Assistant Professor with the Department of Biochemistry at Midwestern University.
A triathlete, Dr. Snider has trained and competed since 1985. He holds an MS in Sports Nutrition and was a registered dietician and American College of Sports Medicine certified Health Fitness Instructor and personal trainer for ten years prior to his entry into medical school. He was recently certified as a baritrician by the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM).
Dr. Snider serves in several roles including regional medical director of Bon Secours Medical Group at DePaul, medical director of Bon Secours Weight Loss Institute, and medical director of In Motion Physical Therapy at DePaul.
Katharine Van Slyke, DO, is a board-certified osteopathic internist. She has a doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Philadelphia, Pa., where she also completed an internship and residency in internal medicine. Dr. Van Slyke continued her training as a resident at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Va. In addition, she has a bachelor of science in biology from the University of Richmond, Richmond, Va., and attended Queen Mary and Westfield College in London, England.
Certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Van Slyke is a member of the American Osteopathic Association, American College of Osteopathic Internists and Virginia Osteopathic Medical Association.
