The Midwifery Center at DePaul - The region’s only hospital-based midwifery center, our center is designed to offer a home-like environment within the safety of a hospital. Our philosophy is to treat birth like a natural process. Our certified nurse midwifes are nurses who are specially trained to assist women with their child's birth.

Our certified nurse-midwives and doulas offer personal attention,  freedom to make an individualized birth plan and a hands-on approach to enhance your personal care and comfort. Jacuzzis are available for mothers who need help relaxing during labor. A family waiting area is easily accessible for family members and friends who await the birth of their new loved one.

Lenny Laureta-Bansil, DO

Lenny Laureta-Bansil, DO, completed her bachelor of science at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., and received her medical degree from Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, Va. She went on to complete her OB/GYN residency at State University of New York, Sisters of Charity Hospital, in Buffalo, N.Y.

Dr. Bansil is certified in laparoscopic surgery (FLS) and da Vinci robotic surgical system. She has participated in several research studies and is a member of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists, American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists, American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, American Urogynecologic Society and American Osteopathic Association. Additionally, Dr. Bansil was a recipient of the 2012 AUGS Award for excellence in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery and the 2013 AAGL Special Resident in Minimally Invasive Gynecology award.

Janet Matthews, DO

Janet Matthews, DO, is a board certified obstetrician and gynecologist. Dr. Matthews has a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, in Tulsa, Okla. She completed an internship at the University of Oklahoma Department of Internal Medicine in Oklahoma City, Okla. and continued her training as a resident in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Missouri Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Columbia, Mo.

Dr. Matthews earned a Master of Arts degree in humanities from the University of Tulsa in Tulsa, as well as a Master of Science in exercise physiology from the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center in Oklahoma City. In addition, she received a Bachelor of Science degree in music education from the University of Illinois in Chicago, Ill.

Dr. Matthews is a member of the American Medical Association, the American Osteopathic Association and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She was previously employed by St. Mary’s Hospital in Enid, Okla. and was also author of a semi-weekly column, Women's Health Today, featured in the Muskogee Phoenix newspaper in Oklahoma.

Angela Parson, MD

Dr. Parson earned her doctorate of medicine from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C. A Norfolk native, she completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk. Her interests include adolescent care and minimally invasive surgery.

Dr. Parson is a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the National Medical Association. She has won several awards and enjoys teaching and community service.

Emily J Thomson, DO

Emily Thomson, DO, completed her bachelor of science at the University of California, Los Angeles, and received her medical degree from Western University of Health Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific, Pomona, Calif. She went on to perform her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Summa Akron City Hospital in Akron, Ohio. Her prior professional experience includes private group practice at a Canton, Ohio, women’s clinic. 

Dr. Thomson’s special interests include providing compassionate care for women during pregnancy as well as gynecologic care utilizing minimally invasive procedures with the da Vinci® robotic surgical system. Dr. Thomson has participated in several research studies and given numerous medical presentations. She is professionally affiliated with The American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology, American Medical Association and American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists.

G. Ted Hughes, MD

Dr. G. Theodore (Ted) Hughes is a native of Norfolk, VA. He completed his medical training at Eastern Virginia Medical School and began practicing in his specialty of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1985.

Dr. Hughes is very active as Medical Director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at Bon Secours Depaul Medical Center, Assistant Professor at the Eastern Virginia Medical School and is a local Medical Examiner for the Tidewater area. He has special interests in urogynecology and minimally invasive surgery and continually trains in the latest techniques to remedy urinary incontinence.

Dr. Hughes was instrumental in opening the first Midwifery Center in Hampton Roads. With the team effort of the Midwives, both in the Center and in traditional care, he has been able to help keep the c-section rate of the group’s patients at 17%, the lowest rate for the state.

In his free time he enjoys flying and restoring vintage cars.

Marybeth R Dixon, MD

Dr. Marybeth Dixon was born in Pennsylvania and attended medical school at The Medical College of Pennsylvania. She completed her residency at the Medical College of Hampton Roads in 1993 and joined a private practice here in Norfolk. She is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is a member of the medical staff at Bon Secours Depaul Medical Center as well as Sentara Norfolk General.

Dr. Dixon is an adjunct faculty member at the Eastern Virginia Medical School and instructs residents during surgery. She enjoys caring for women of all ages from adolescent through menopause.

When not at work, Dr. Dixon enjoys spending time with her husband and children. She loves the outdoors especially gardening and watersports. Dr. Dixon is a member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Norfolk.

Elizabeth B Golpira, MD

Dr. Elizabeth Baker Golpira has been with WomanCare Centers since 2004. She grew up in Norfolk, VA and graduated from Norfolk Collegiate School. She obtained her undergraduate degree in French and History from Washington and Lee University. After her medical training at Eastern Virginia Medical School, she completed internship and residency at the University of Virginia.

Dr. Golpira is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is a member of the medical staff at DePaul Medical Center and Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. She has special interests in adolescent gynecology.

When not at work, Dr. Golpira enjoys spending time with her husband and three daughters. She is an avid skier and runner.

Jennifer Cheney, CNM

Jennifer, a Virginia Beach native, had the calling to become a midwife while completing her Human Services Counseling BS and Women Studies BS at Old Dominion University. She then attended many midwifery conferences, did research, hung out with some great midwives and doulas in Hampton Roads, and lived in Europe for a semester during which time she was gathering more momentum, information and love for women’s health. She completed her Nursing BSN and MSN work at Shenandoah University, becoming a CNM . She fulfilled a life long dream and joined the WomanCare Centers, PLC team in January 2010.

Jennifer is also active in volunteering at WHRO, member of several professional organization, and supporter local businesses. Jennifer enjoys music, movies, anything that requires creativity and bicycling with her family.

Blair F Conger, CNM

Blair Conger joined WomanCare Centers in the Fall of 2000.  She attended  Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing Community Based Nurse-Midwifery Education Program in Hyden, Kentucky.  She has a Masters of Science in Midwifery from The State University of New York, Stoney Brook. 

Her undergraduate studies were completed at Medical College of Virginia School of Nursing and Virginia Commonwealth University.  Blair is certified by the American College of Nurse Midwifery.

Neldara A Dowell, CNM

Neldara Dowell had always aspired to be a nurse-midwife. She started her journey by obtaining her nursing diploma from DePaul Medical Center School of Nursing, then undergraduate and master degrees in Nursing from Old Dominion University . Nell received her certificate in Nurse Midwifery from The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 1995. The next step of her career was to assist in the creation of The Midwifery Center at Depaul Medical Center in 1999 and feels blessed to continue being part of the process of caring for women and their families at DePaul Nell is certified by the American College of Nurse Midwives and the birth center is a member of the American Association of Birth Centers. Nell has been married to Mike since 1979 and is mother to Laine and her husband Lee, Emily and Russell.

H Dixon Wolcott, MD

Dr. Hugh Dixon Wolcott graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1967 where he was a Trident Scholar. He then received a Master’s Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Princeton University as a Guggenheim Fellow. Dr. Wolcott was then a Naval Aviator in Fighter Squadrons 101 and 14 and later a test pilot at the Naval Air Test Center. He retired from the Navy as a Captain in the Medical Corps.

Dr. Wolcott obtained his Medical Degree from Northwestern University. He completed his internship and residency at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia. He is Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. 

Dr. Wolcott is a member of the medical staff at Depaul Medical Center and Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He is active on the Executive Board of Mid-Atlantic Women’s Care and chairs the Quality Improvement/Patient Safety Committee. He has been a WomanCare Centers physician since 1991 and has special interests in mid-life and later-life well being and in sexual dysfunction issues.

Gayatri Kapur, MD

Dr. Kapur joined EVMS in 2001.  She has won several teaching awards including a certificate of recognition from the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Dr. Kapur's clinical interests include laparoscopy and postmenopausal gynecology.

Mary Burns, MD

Dr. Mary Antoinette Burns has had the privilege of practicing Obstetrics and Gynecology in the Hampton Roads area since 1995. She graduated from St. George's University, School of Medicine, with honors in 1990. Then she completed her internship and residency, including Chief Residency, in OB/GYN in Seton Hall University, New Jersey.  She then underwent fellowship training in Urogynecology/Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. This is specialized training in treating disorders of the genitourinary  system such as urinary incontinence, Interstitial Cystitis, and prolapse (bulging) of the vagina, bladder and/or the uterus.  She has had extensive experience in surgery, cystoscopy, and urodynamics. 

Being part of an excellent healthcare team, allows Dr. Burns freedom to enjoy her free time.  Dr. Burns is married to Dr. Matthew Mitsch, an oculoplastic surgeon at The Face Institute, and she is a mother of two great high school students.  She enjoys traveling and being with her family.  

As a gynecologic surgeon, her areas of surgical interest range from minimally invasive procedures, such as laparoscopy, to major reconstructive restoration of pelvic floor disorders. Areas of interest in the office setting range from contraceptive issues to peri/menopausal issues, STD prevention to precancerous conditions of the female organs.

However, her passion and extensive training is in the treatment of urinary incontinence. Over 50 million American women suffer from this condition. Unfortunately, less than half will seek treatment. There are various excellent treatment options available - both surgical and nonsurgical. Dr. Burns is a referral source for many family doctors and gynecologists in the Tidewater area as well as North Carolina. Educating women that this is a treatable condition is her professional goal!

Reena Talreja-Pelaez, MD

Reena Talreja-Pelaez, MD, FACOG offers complete obstetrical and gynecologic services to the women of Hampton Roads.  Her services include well-woman evaluations, contraceptive counseling and management, management of abnormal pap smears and treatment of cervical disorders, preconceptional care, menopausal care and the medical and surgical evaluation and management of complex gynecologic problems including abnormal bleeding, uterine fibroids, ovarian problems, pelvic pain, endometriosis and pelvic prolapse.  Along with her obstetric colleagues, she provides complete management of pregnancy, including delivery and postpartum care.  Her areas of particular interest and expertise include advanced hysteroscopic and laparoscopic minimally-invasive surgery, pregnancy and contraception management.

As a native of Virginia Beach, Dr. Talreja-Pelaez is a graduate of our very own Frank W. Cox High School. She received a Bachelor of Arts Degree with honors as an Echol's Scholar at the University of Virginia and her Medical Degree from Vanderbilt University Medical School under full scholarship. She also completed her training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Vanderbilt University and then returned to serve the patients of her home community. She serves as a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.  She has been an active member of Mid-Atlantic Women's Care where she served as chairman of the Quality Management committee.  She currently serves on staff at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital. Additionally, she is on staff at the Beach Health Clinic serving the gynecologic needs of local indigent patients as well as a regular volunteer physician. 

In her free time, she enjoys running, cycling, swimming, yoga, cooking and reading. When not in the office or hospital, you can often find her walking on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay or running the trails of First Landing State Park and local neighborhoods. She is fortunate to have a family rooted in the community, including a father, brother and sister-in-law who are also active in the medical community of Virginia Beach and a husband who is a local dentist.  As a new mother to two young children, she has developed a new appreciation for the complete pregnancy and parenting journey of her obstetric patients.  She looks forward to a long and healthy future career caring for women and families in our medical community.

Lisbet Hanson, MD

Lisbet Hanson, MD, FACOG has been practicing Obstetrics and Gynecology in Virginia Beach for over 20 years. For the past several years, she has concentrated exclusively on the practice of Gynecology. Dr. Hanson’s special interests lie in minimally invasive surgical treatment for gynecologic disorders, but she provides comprehensive GYN care including contraceptive and hormonal therapy, preconception health counseling, and both medical and surgical treatment for such issues as chronic pelvic pain, endometriosis, abnormal uterine bleeding, and pelvic floor dysfunction.  More recently she spear headed Virginia Beach OBGYN's development of the Adolescent Gynecology and IV Office Sedation Programs.  She is a certified da Vinci robotic surgeon.

Originally from Vermont, Dr. Hanson has enjoyed living in Europe, Canada and the US in pursuit of her first career as a professional ballet dancer.  She received her BA from the University of Vermont and went on to get her MD at the College of Medicine at the same institution. In 1982, Dr. Hanson moved to Hampton Roads and completed her specialty training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Eastern Virginia Medical School.  She is currently on the Community Faculty of the EVMS OBGYN Department.

In her free time, Dr. Hanson and her husband enjoy watersports, including sailing both locally and internationally. She has two children--now young, independent adults.  Dance continues to be a vital part of her life and Dr. Hanson enjoys sharing her talent and expertise with dance students and arts organizations locally.   She is a founding member of the Board of TRDance, a local professional dance company.  She is an active member of her church, starting a liturgical dance ministry and more recently, helping to develop medical programs for a twin parish in Haiti.  She has been Team Leader for the International Society of Ultrasound in OBGYN training programs directed to physicians and nurse midwives in Haiti and Somaliland as well as part of a team providing training in Ghana.  When not busy with these commitments, Dr. Hanson enjoys Pilates, Yoga, and "learning something new."

Annie L Williams, MD

Annie Williams, MD, FACOG, established Contemporary OB-GYN Associates in 1983, making it one of the longest operating independent practices in Hampton Roads. A Newport News native, she completed undergraduate studies at Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Williams earned her medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School.

Dr. Williams says that obstetrics and gynecology offer everything a physician could want—the challenge of diagnosis, surgery, research and the feeling of being personally connected to patients. Over the course of 30 years, Dr. Williams has delivered thousands of babies and has enjoyed seeing many of those babies grow up and then deliver their babies.

In addition to the direct care of patients, Dr. Williams is a vocal advocate for women’s health issues and initiatives. She routinely speaks at venues throughout the community to advance education and awareness about female health and wellness. In all of her endeavors she strives to empower women to take charge of their bodies and their lives through preventative health care, contraceptive counseling and treatment of complex gynecologic problems.

Dr. Williams is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and serves as a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Arlene J Fontanares, MD

Graduated in 1986 from the University of Virginia.  She earned her medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School in 1990, where she also completed her internship / residency in 1994 and continues to serve as a member of the Clinical Faculty.  Dr. Fontanares is a native of Hampton Roads.  She is married and has two sons.  She enjoys knitting, reading, photography, and traveling.  She is fluent in Philippine dialects.  Dr. Fontanares loves delivering babies. She has a special interest in adolescent care and preventative wellness.

Charles A Wilkes, MD

Graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1976 from the College of William and Mary. He earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1980 and completed his residency in 1984 at the Eastern Virginia Medical School and continues to serve as a member of the Clinical Faculty. He is married with one daughter. He is an avid racquetball player. He enjoys skiing and photography and has a special interest in computer technology.

Frank Morgan, MD

Graduated in 1974 from the University of Richmond.  He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in 1978 and completed his residency in 1982 at the Eastern Virginia Medical School and continues to serve as a member of the Clinical Faculty.  He is the proud father of two sons.  He enjoys golf, baseball, and listening to books.

Long G. Amy, NP

April G. Long has provided care to patients with all forms of liver disease under the driection of Dr. Shiffman for four years. She has an excellent fund of knowledge in the management of all forms of liver disease and has extensive experience in the management of patients receiving pegiterferon and ribavirin for treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus. Ms. Long's vast experience in managing the side effects of these medications has enabled her patients to be cured of chronic HCV at a higher rate than is observed at many other institutions. 

Ms. Long is a board certified family nurse practitioner with four years of experince in the evaluation and treatment of patients with liver disease. She has a bachelor of science in biology and nursing from the Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va. In addition, she holds a master of science in nursing from VCU. She was a sub-investigator and clinical studies coordinator for various on many HCV-related protocols.

She is a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, American College of Gastroenterology and Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners.

Carol Delfaus, MD

Dr. Delfaus is one of the founding members of Commonwealth Neonatology and works primarily at Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News as well as St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond. She has worked in general pediatrics and neonatology throughout the east coast including Henrico Doctor’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk, Virginia Beach General Hospital, West Jersey Health System, Sentara Health Plans, Brunswick Pediatric Group in New Jersey and Memorial Sloan Kettering Institute for Cancer Research in New York.

She completed her residency and internship in pediatrics from Nassau County Medical Center in New York, received her Medical Degree from the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan and a B.S. from Iona College in Rochelle, New York. Dr. Delfaus is fluent in Spanish.

Robert Shwayder, MD

Over the last three decades, Dr. Shwayder has elevated the level of OB/GYN care on the Virginia Peninsula.  After graduating from the University of Colorado and the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Dr. Shwayder completed his internship and residency at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia.

Dr. Shwayder had the opportunity to participate in this country's first protocol laboratories in the research, development and implementation of OB/GYN ultrasounds, gynecological microsurgeries, OB/GYN soft tissue laser surgeries, major operative and advanced laparoscopies, and hysteroscopic surgeries.  He further pursued post-residency sabbaticals and training to become credentialed in these procedures at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, laser research laboratories at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital, and laser surgery laboratories at Portsmouth Naval Regional Medical Center. He has also been involved in studies at the medical schools of the University of Pennsylvania, Stanford, Baylor, Vanderbilt and the University of Louisville, Kentucky.

With this extensive background and experience, Dr. Shwayder introduced OB/GYN ultrasound to the Hampton Roads region in 1978, gynecological microsurgery to Mary Immaculate Hospital in 1980, and laser soft tissue surgeries and major operative laparoscopy and hysteroscopy to the region in 1983.

Dedicated to offering the leading edge in OB/GYN care, Dr. Shwayder became certified in advanced laparoscopic and hysteroscopic operatives in 1990 by the governing board of these procedures, now the American Academy of Gynecologic Laparoscopists. Most recently, Dr. Shwayder was credentialed and certified in major Robotic da Vinci operative laparoscopic surgeries in 2008, through studies at the Bethesda Regional Medical Center and Riverside Regional Medical Center.
