Kevin G Shortt, MD

Kevin G Shortt, MD Cardiothoracic Surgery and General Surgery

Kevin G. Shortt, MD is a staff cardiothoracic surgeon in the Department of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery and Director of Quality for the Heart & Vascular Institute. He specializes in heart failure surgery, aortic and mitral valve repair and replacement, off-pump coronary bypass grafting, the surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation (MAZE procedure), treatment of pulmonary hypertension caused by chronic pulmonary emboli, reoperations, and ascending aortic replacement. Dr. Shortt is certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery.

Dr. Shortt has performed more than 2,000 heart operations since 1998, and he has authored or co-authored published studies and abstracts in peer-reviewed publications, including The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, and Cardiology, among others.

Dr. Shortt earned his undergraduate degree from Iona College and medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry - New Jersey Medical School. His residency in general surgery, was obtained at The University of Massachusetts Medical School, where he became Chief Surgical Resident, and received fellowships in cardiothoracic surgery research. He completed his Cardiac and Thoracic training at the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery, Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He then received advanced training in cardiac surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Heart Center – including mitral valve repair and in 2003 was appointed as Associate Staff Surgeon.

In 2004 Dr. Shortt was appointed to the faculty of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons where he was integral in establishing an adult cardiac surgical program at Bassett Healthcare, also serving as Medical Director. In 2009, Dr. Shortt joined Bon Secours and in 2012, became Director of Quality for the Heart & Vascular Institute in Portsmouth and in this role, guides the efforts to improve the quality and safety of health care delivered at the Bon Secours facility in Hampton Roads. Dr. Shortt’s also serves as Chairman of the Credentialing Committee for Maryview Medical Center.

He is a member of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American Heart Association, and the Society for Heart Valve Disease. Dr. Shortt is also a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.

John Goodhart, PA-C

John Goodhart, PA-C Physician Assistant

John F. Goodhart, PA-C, is a cardiac surgery physician assistant with more than 15 years experience. Goodhart received his bachelor's degree from Long Island University and completed the Physician Assistant Program at Brooklyn's Cumberland Hospital. He is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, the Ohio Association of Physician Assistants, and the Association of Physician Assistants in Cardiovascular Surgery. Goodhart is licensed in Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. He is a clinical instructor for EVMS Physician Assistant students, and a member of SCCM (Society of Critical Care Medicine) and VAPA (Virginia Association of Physician Assistants).
